In Ramadan, Indonesia receives the traditional drumming known as “Buduk” as one of the manifestations of the celebration of the advent of the holy month, and the government gives students leave in the first week of Ramadan to get used to fasting.
Before the month of Ramadan, Javanese Muslims perform what is known as the Nidran ritual. It is a tradition intended to clean oneself by praying near the graves of their ancestors. This tradition blends local culture with Islamic traditions. Every year, the villagers who live on the slopes of Mount Merapi and Merbabu, Boyolali, Central Java perform rituals where the participants number up to several thousand. People gather from 15 villages in the area and perform these rituals alternately in each village cemetery. The local villagers begin the ritual by cleaning the cemetery. Then they begin to pray for their families and deceased relatives. The rituals vary by location, but generally include readings from some parts of the Qur’an.
It is said that the origin of the word nidran comes from the Sanskrit word, which is its narration. The term Hindus use to refer to a ritual that leads to the souls of a person’s ancestors by making a grave pilgrimage.
